MEANING OF FAMILY
Family is made of people who are related to one another by blood.
TYPES OF FAMILY
There are two (2) of family,
1. NUCLEAR FAMILY
Nuclear family is the smallest unit of family that consists of the father, mother and their children.
2. EXTENDED FAMILY
Extended family is the family beyond nuclear family.
It consists of the father, mother and their children with grandparents, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, in laws and others.
MEMBERS OF NUCLEAR FAMILY
Nuclear family consist of the –
1. Father
2. Mother
3. Children
MEMBERS OF THE EXTENDED FAMILY
Extended family is the family that consists father, mother and their children with –
1. Grandfathers
2. Grandmothers
3. Uncles
4. Aunts
5. Cousins
6. Nephews
7. Nieces
8. In laws, and other.

RELATIONSHIPS OF MEMBERS OF THE EXTENDED FAMILY
1. FATHER – Father is the male parent of the family.
2. MOTHER – Mother is the female parent of the family.
3. CHILDREN – Children are the dependant ages of the family.
4. UNCLES – Uncle is the brother of one’s father or mother.
5. AUNTS – Aunt is the sister of one’s father or mother.
6. COUSINS – Cousin are the children of one’s uncle or aunt.
7. NEPHEW – Nephew is the son of one’s brother, sister, brother-in-law or sister-in-law.
8. NIECES – Niece is the daughter of one’s brother, sister, brother-in-law or sister-in-law.
9. GRANDPARENTS – Grandparent is the parent of one’s father or mother. They are also called grandfather or grandmother.
10. IN LAWS – In law is the relationship by marriage.
11. GRANDCHILDREN – Grandchildren are the children of one’s son or daughter.
12. STEP PARENTS – A parent who is married to the father or mother of a child, but who is not that child’s own father or mother; a stepfather or stepmother.
13. STEP CHILDREN – Step children are children of one’s husband or wife by a previous marriage.
14. STEWARDS – A steward is the person who manages the property or affairs for another entity.
15. HOUSE HELPS – House help is someone who is paid to help with the cleaning and take care of someone else’s home.
IMPORTANCE OF THE FAMILY
1. They love one another.
2. They have great concern and interest for one another.
3. They have sense of belonging.
4. They give assistance to one another.
5. They protect and defend one another.
6. They protect the family’s name.
7. They pass down the good family’s traditions from one generation to another.
OBLIGATIONS OF OTHER PEOPLE IN THE FAMILY
1. Caring for one another others.
2. Supporting one another in need.
3. Defending one another.
4. Teaching some part of the culture –
- Greetings
- Fairness
- Respect
- Folk story
- Correcting our misbehaviours, etc.
IMPORTANCE OF TOLERATING OTHER PEOPLE IN THE FAMILY
1. To show love to one other.
2. To live peacefully to another.
3. To care and respect one another.
4. To forgive and forget one another, etc.
